Literary Review Criteria is a checklist I created to enhance my book ratings and reviews. Below, is the breakdown of Literary Review CriteriaV1.

C1 PLOT

Plot is engaging and dynamic. The use of devices is purposeful and appropriate. Narrative follows a logical cause-and-effect sequence and there are no jarring plot holes.

C2 SETTING

Time and geographic location are well described and provide an immersing experience. The setting makes sense in the context of the plot. Any worldbuilding is done in a manner consistent with the overall purpose and the plot of the book.

C3 PERSPECTIVE

The choice and use of perspectives is enriching the text. Changes in perspectives are easily recognizable and are not affecting the overall flow. Perspectives are not distracting from the plot.

C4 STYLE

Stylistic and literary devices are supporting the plot and are helping convey emotions or provide insight. Devices are used with purpose. The sentences are not too long or overly ornate. Use of complex language is intentional.

C5 CHARACTERS

Characters are behaving logically with respect to their construction. Characters are multifaceted and not one-dimensional. Characters are not excessively introduced at random and without purpose, their motivations and relationships are clear. Character descriptions focus on aspects relevant to the plot.

C6 THEME

The author is conveying an underlying message or concept. There is depth to text.

C7 ORIGINALITY

There is originality to the text. The text is not formulaic and predictable.

C8 IMPRESSIONS

The text leaves lasting impression. The plot and the characters are memorable. The text evokes thought.

C9 IMMERSION

The text is written in an immersive manner. Sufficient details are provided to allow the readers to picture themselves in the story, yet details are not overwhelming or unnecessarily complex.
